Is constant conflict overwhelming you and your spouse, partner, or family member? This isn’t uncommon and affects more households than we care to count.
Who do we work with?
Our approach to relationship counseling
When communication starts to fade, everything else quickly follows.
We utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with an experiential approach in our work with couples at Modern Counseling. CBT in relationship counseling is a highly-structured approach for identifying, understanding and resolving unhealthy patterns of conflict, communication, and emotional distress. One of the greatest hindrances to a healthy relationship are our cognitive distortions. In plain english… a cognitive distortion is our mind convincing us that something is the way it is without any real truth or evidence to prove it’s true. These distortions are tricky because they can cause us to feel negatively about our partners, believing things about them that have no relevance. Over time, it turns into habit or pattern and breaks down the relationship.
We help to identify and break old, unproductive patterns built by cognitive distortions. The therapist focuses on what the clients are experiencing in the moment, and challenges them to do activities in session such as role-playing or using props. That way the clients are practicing healthy ways of communicating and interacting with one another.

Untrusted, unloved, not respected… we’ve heard it all. Relationships aren't easy and you knew this going into it, but we can help you or you and your loved one really enjoy it.
Whether you are curious about ways to deepen connection and learn more about a new partner, or you’ve been married for 40 years, we can help get things on track.
Relationship counseling encompasses many relationships. At Modern Counseling, we conduct marriage counseling, couples counseling, family counseling, and relationship counseling with the goal being to understand each other and resolve conflicts to improve the relationship.
But here’s a little secret that you should remember… No relationship is 100% ideal! By now you might see the importance of relationship counseling but finding the right person to work with is the key to your relationship’s success. Up to 22% of the actual effectiveness of relationship counseling rests on the therapist you choose to work with. In other words - if you pick a therapist that isn’t right for your situation, your relationship with your loved one might be worse off.
At Modern Counseling, this is extremely important to us. We start with gaining rapport with both clients in the relationship so we can offer a non-judgemental perspective and ensure the comfort of each person within the relationship.
Be aware, relationship counseling can be difficult for many clients. Unlike individual counseling, there are two people (or more) in the session with two different views of the relationship. We educate clients on how to balance those differences to increase communication. Poor communication is painful and frustrating for everyone. With our help, it can get easier. Our therapists make sure that couples are working on their relationships during and outside of sessions.
